What to wear to a Christmas mini photoshoot – Family Photography in West Sussex, Kent and Surrey.
Christmas is coming and what a perfect time for a photoshoot!
Thinking of what to wear – then read on!
Seasonal outfits are currently bursting out of the shops. But what makes the perfect outfit for a Christmas photoshoot?
Consider how seasonal you want your Christmas photographs to be?
If you are thinking about using your photos for Christmas cards you may want to dress very “Christmassy”.
Christmas jumpers and cords or jeans work well.
Christmas PJ’s are fabulous for some sets.
Places like Matalan, Next, Marks and Spencer or Gap are great for these items. It is best to avoid cartoon characters and logos as these will date the images, be distracting and make them less classy. However Santa, elves, reindeers etc are all great. It’s the one time when I would say it’s ok to wear bold stripes!
If you would like to give the photographs as gifts or would like them to be more sophisticated then you may want to dress your children in Christmas party outfits:
For girls: think velvet, satin or tartan dresses, cord pinafores, tulle skirts and pretty fluffy cardigans.
For boys: think smart jeans, smart shirts – perhaps tartan, bow ties, jumper pull overs.
What types of colours?
First of all if you are having studio photographs check with the photographer what type of set they are using. Try to match your outfits accordingly. Dark backdrops suit navy, greens and red. Gold will also look fabulous. Paler backdrops will suit cream/white, brown/ beige and pale blue colours.
Photographers like myself also often offer clients use of their handmade outfits, especially for the under ones, so it is working asking in advance.
If you are having an outdoor Christmas photoshoot then this is the chance to wrap up warm with hats and scarves and winter coats. Stick to the same types of colours. Avoid illuminous colours.
Some photographers may allow you to bring more than one outfit for a contrast of images or they may use more than one set. Ask ahead. A funny shot at the end is often nice or think about bringing something special that may mean something to the recipients of the photograph. The photo below went to Grandad and this teddy was very special.
If you have more than one child think about how the clothes will look together. Look at the tonal range – they can all be dressed the same if their ages are close and this can look great for Christmas photographs but otherwise coordinate the greens, navy reds and beiges.
“Shall we wear special shoes?
Sometimes your photographer may ask you to remove shoes but if you have smart party shoes or boots these can look great. For outdoors avoid bright coloured or trainers with logos. Stick to plain wellies or autumn boots.
What about us grown ups?
Although a lot of Christmas minis are for children I have always included a shot or two with the whole family and these are great to get. Some match their children’s PJ’s or wear smart party dresses and jeans and a checked shirt.
