/I was absolutely thrilled last week to be crowned a Finalist in the Master Photography Association’s Up and Coming Portrait category for the South East Region. The winner for the Pet Photographer of the year in this portrait category won with an image of a parrot making me runner up Pet Photographer of the Year 2020 !!
The Master Photography Association is one of the leading photography associations in the UK and it was an honour to be recognised in this very busy competition! Only an image scoring 85% and higher can be a finalist. The subject of my winning image was Midas, the King Charles Cavalier cross whom I was fortunate to meet during a client photoshoot at the end of last year. Midas is owned by an amazing entrepreneur called Sarah who runs the fantastic Pet Shop in Tunbridge Wells, Kent called Pets Fayre.
Another image from his shoot got a merit ( a score of 80-84 %) so his owner was overjoyed. These photos of Midas were actually taken whilst he had a lead on and was resting watching his German Shepherd cross brother having his photos taken. He really relaxed and I was able to shoot him in these beautiful poses without him realising.
I was proud to also win further merits in this competition for my images of other dogs. The first was for the very beautiful Holly which was taken in my client’s garden because Holly was a bit reactive with other dogs. Holly is a rescue Labrador / Springer Spaniel cross and the owner had rehomed her a couple of years ago. She was doing a fantastic job with Holly and although it took a little while for Holly to calm there was such a gorgeous relationship between the two of them this young lady would do anything to please.
What I loved about this shoot was how we managed to find this really unusual background in the garden which complimented Holly’s persona so beautifully in this image. This competition involved a morning of on line critiques and the Judge said she thought it was very unusual to be able to achieve such a pose with a breed of this nature.
Winston was actually still a 17 week old puppy believe it or not?! The Judge really liked the way the pathway framed him so well. amongst other things. She also loved of course the way his German Shepherd ear was not standing up yet making him look so cute! I have been assured by Josh his owner at Josh Unleashed dog walking based in East Grinstead that they are both fully upright now!
I got 4 separate certificates for my awards with the MPA but this is of course my favourite! The Judging was done by Google Meet due to Covid-19 and it is safe to say I enjoyed some nice wine to celebrate whilst everyone clapped!! Now it’s the National Awards to entered by the end of July! Wish me luck!
